Getting an ICP license enables you to host your websites and landing pages within China, which comes with the following benefits:

There are two types of ICP licenses issued by the Chinese government at the provincial level:

Not everyone is eligible for an ICP license. To apply for an ICP license, you need to be one of the following:

• A Wholly Foreign Owned Enterprise (WFOE) with a valid Chinese business license.
• A join venture with a valid Chinese business license.
• A Chinese national with a valid Citizenship Card. (Only eligible for individual ICP for a personal site)
• A foreigner with a valid passport and a Chinese resident permit. (For individual ICP only, and rarely successful)

What to do if you are not eligible for an ICP license on your own?

To apply for an ICP license for a personal website, you need to provide:

• Copy of your personal ID
• Website information authenticity certificate
• Information security form
• Domain certificate
• Other documents required by the government on a case by case basis

If you are are applying for a business website ICP, you also have to submit the following:

• Copy of your business license
• Your organization code certificate

In both cases, make sure you also have:

• A physical Chinese address where you can receive mail and parcels.
• A Chinese landline number.
• A Chinese mobile phone number with SMS features.
• A Chinese bank account and an Alipay account.
• Someone who can read and write Chinese to fill out forms and documents.
• Lots of time and patience.
